Pollok Shopping Centre, Glasgow

The Pollok Shopping Centre Development, located in Pollok, Glasgow, is a multi storey development with the ground floor slabs all constructed using post-tensioned concrete. With a ground floor area of approximately 30,000m2 and poor ground conditions existent on the site, the use of post-tensioned slabs enabled the removal of half the foundations to the ground floor and provided significant savings to the contract programme.

The conforming scheme for the ground floor was 325-400mm thick RC slabs on a 7.5m x 5m grid of RC ground beams. ConForce were able to re-design these slabs and utilise a 275mm post-tensioned flat plate on a grid of 7.5m x 10m with no ground beams required. The post-tensioned slabs were designed to span two ways between pile caps. With the ground floor slab divided into 40 individual pours of approximately 750m2 per pour, the site program was on average 3 pours per week for the duration of the project.
